Purulia is a district adjacent Bihar. It is a economically poor district. Oilseed milling, silk and cotton weaving, and canework and shellac manufacture are the major industries. Just north of the Kasai River, the town of Purulia is a major road and rail junction and the region's major agricultural distribution centre. 
 

In Purulia district a special programme namely Decentralised Planning & Information Management Initiative (DPIMI) with support from UNICEF, was launched on 1st June 2005 by Hon’ble MIC, Panchayats & Rural Development, Govt. of West Bengal. The main objective of this programme is to develop Purulia as a child-friendly district within 2007 by ensuring community participation and their ownership in participatory planning & development process (PPIM) on the one hand and development of an effective MIS (DIMI) on the other. Presently PPIM process has been initiated in 25 GPs in 10 blocks, which will be gradually up-scaled throughout the district within next 2 years.
